This class will present up-to-date information and various theories in neurodevelopmental research in executive function and emotional regulation. What role do these functions play in learning, AD/HD, and anxiety? With today's accelerated academic curriculum, teachers feel pressured to meet the demands to "teach it all" and parents feel pressured to ensure that their children are "successful." What happens to children who fail to keep up with academic and social learning? How can teachers and therapists collaborate to understand these children so that they can more effectively facilitate their development?
Class participants are encouraged to bring a case for discussion in this interactive class.
Course objectives are to understand the following:
1. Research findings and theories of executive function and emotional
regulation.
2. How executive function and emotional regulation affect child
development and learning.
3. The role of object relations in child development and learning.
4. How therapists and teachers can "think together" in a collaborative
manner to be even more effective in their relationships with the
child and their parents.
Barbara Bennett, M. A., a Seattle private practice Educational Therapist/Consultant, has worked with many individuals of different ages, skill levels, and abilities to teach them how to be skilled, successful individuals. She has worked as a preschool consultant to identify students who have learning, language, executive function, and emotional regulation disorders so that they can benefit from early identification. She has trained pediatricians, psychiatrists, parents, and teachers to "think outside the box" to collaborate for the good of the individual. Ms. Bennett has trained with many specialists in related
disciplines to develop an effective, broad-based approach in her work with those who learn "differently."
Roberta Martinez-Banks, Ph.D., is a psychoanalytic psychotherapist trained in British Object Relations Theory.
She treats children and adults in private practice. She also serves as a daycare consultant helping staff and parents understand the emotional development of children.
