British Object Relations Psychotherapy has gained prominence because of its original contribution to understanding how early emotional experiences become incorporated into personality. These early experiences become leading factors in healthy relatedness, emotional security, and empathy as well as in mental suffering, primitive defenses, and interpersonal difficulties. They can be difficult to recognize in practice because they are often pre-verbal, pre-mental, anti-mental, and/or directed against the therapy. Topics include: creating a therapeutic environment, unconscious communications and derivatives, transference, splitting, projective identification, autistic and psychotic parts of the personality and countertransference. The second half of each session will involve a presentation of case material from a seminar participant, discussion by the group and application to what we are learning. This course is open to all clinicians who are interested.

Pre-requisites: Master’s degree in psychology or related field
